Floor Demolition

Removing old floor coverings can be a messy and time-consuming task, but it is an essential step in preparing floors for new flooring. No matter what floor covering is being installed, you’ll need to remove any existing flooring materials first, otherwise the new floor covering may fail and manufacturers won’t warrant their product.

The first step in removing old floor coverings is to remove any furniture and other items from the room. This gives plenty of space to work and will help to protect furniture and belongings from damage.

Next, any nails or staples that are holding the old flooring in place will need to be removed. When dealing with timber, tiles, or vinyl, there are specialised floor stripping machines available to remove the material. Carpet on the other hand, a knife is recommended to cut the carpet into small sections to roll up. If the carpet has been adhered down, then a floor stripper is a must.

Once the old flooring has been removed, any adhesive or glue that is left behind will need to be removed. This is done be using a concrete grinding machine or a hand grinder. Wearing appropriate safety gear, such as a respirator mask, to protect yourself from harmful dust is highly recommended.

Floor Preparation

Floor preparation is a crucial step in ensuring that new flooring is installed correctly and will last for years to come. Important aspects of floor preparation is the use of masonite underlay, also the process of ramping, skim coat, screeding and concrete grinding.

Masonite underlay is a type of thin, hardboard panel that is used as a base for new flooring. It provides a smooth and level surface for the new flooring to be installed on, and it helps to absorb any minor imperfections in the subfloor. This is particularly useful and recommended when installing vinyl over a timber sub floor.

Ramping is a process that is used to create a smooth transition between different levels of flooring. This is particularly useful when installing flooring in an area that is adjacent to a threshold or door. The ramp is typically made of the same material as the flooring and is used to create a seamless transition between the two areas.

A skim coat is a thin layer of a cement-based material that is applied to the subfloor prior to the installation of new flooring. This serves to smooth out any minor imperfections in the subfloor and provides a level surface for the new flooring to be installed on.

Screeding is the process of levelling and smoothing the surface of a concrete slab or subfloor before the installation of new flooring. This is done using a long, straightedge tool called a rake screed and it helps to ensure that the surface is level and even.

Concrete grinding involves removing the top layer of concrete to leave a smooth surface using specialized tools. It’s commonly used in commercial and industrial settings, but can also be used in homes. This method removes old coatings, sealants, and stains, eliminates roughness and trip hazards, and prepares surfaces for new coatings and flooring like polished concrete, vinyl, carpet, engineered timber, and epoxy coatings.

Engineered Timber

Because of its sustainability, beauty, toughness and adaptability, engineered timber flooring is a popular choice for many homeowners. An additional layer of solid wood and other materials, primarily plywood, are bonded together to create the composite flooring material.

Its longevity is one of its key advantages. Compared to solid wood flooring, this material is more stable and resistant to fluctuations in temperature and humidity due to its numerous layers. As a result, it is less prone to grow, crack, or deform over time.

Its adaptability is a further advantage. It can be put in place over concrete or other subfloor materials, among other places. It is an excellent choice for both new building and renovation projects because it may be floated, glued, or fastened down as well.

Although more robust and resistant to environmental changes, it nevertheless delivers the same natural beauty of solid wood flooring.
